NEWSFLASH . . . Jekyll & Hyde takes over 2010 Show!
Thurles Musical Society is delighted to annouce that our 2010 production has been changed and will now be the hit musical Jekyll and Hyde.
We had hoped to stage Fiddler on the Roof in 2010 but our Director Tony Finnegan, informed us that he is Directing that same show in Rush a week before our run. Therefore, we, and he, felt it would be more prudent to revise our initial decision. And, after much debate and consultation at committee level, the decision was taken to stage the very dramatic and moving Jekyll and Hyde.
As part of our preparations for the show, we will be holding a Jekyll and Hyde workshop on Sunday afternoon, November 1st, from 2 - 6 pm in the Anner Hotel, with Tony Finnegan present to bring those interested in taking the lead role through the various requirements. This will prove invaluable at auditions and of course, it will be open to anyone interested, both inside and outside our Society, to have a go. The Workshop will concentrate soley on the role of Jekyll and Hyde. If you are interested in taking part please contact Laura on ryanlauram@eircom.net.
We are very excited about this show which was adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," It tells the story of Dr. Henry Jekyll, a brilliant young doctor and research scientist who, distraught over his father's mental illness, embarks upon a quest to isolate the dual elements of good and evil that are constantly struggling for supremacy inside every human being. However, when his experiment backfires, Jekyll inadvertently gives life to Edward Hyde, his evil alter ego, a murderous being who will let loose a reign of terror on the city of London and those who had ridiculed Jekyll's research.
Jekyll & Hyde was originally produced in 1990 at the Houston's Tony Award-winning Alley Theatre. An instantaneous success with audiences and critics alike, it went on to break box office records, and its original run was extended four times during that first summer. In 1995, the show was remounted by Houston's Theater Under the Stars and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater. Adding to the show's momentum, stars such as Liza Minnelli and The Moody Blues soon began to record songs from the show. Finally, on April 28, 1997, Jekyll & Hyde made its Broadway debut at the Plymouth Theatre. Another resounding success, this production was nominated for 4 Tony Awards. Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll/Hyde) won the Drama Desk award for Best Actor in a Musical. And Linda Eder (Lucy) won a 1997 Theater World Award for Outstanding Debut Performer in New York City.
Rehearsals will commence in January for the show with auditions to follow.
So get to work on those Cockney accents and "consider yourself , one of us" - to borrow a phrase from another Cockney musical (Oliver).
Bag Pack ~ 22nd- 24th October
Calling on all members to give a hand out at our annual Bg Pack on October 22nd -24th in Costcutter, Friar Street, Thurles between the hours of 11:30am and 6:30pm - a much needed fundraiser for our Society.
The Bag Pack has proven to be a very vital source of income at this time of the year and we are looking forward to getting plenty of help from our members as well as enjoying continued support from members of the public in Thurles and the surrounding parishes.
Our committee members will be in touch with you in the coming days to try and fill in all the time slots and we would encourage everyone who is available to commit to some time - even just an hour would be a major help.
As we all know, the cost of shows continue to rise year on year and it is particularly important that we have a good turnout for our annual Bag Pack this year to help us financially as they face towards our 2010 production, rehearsals for which will begin in early January.
So, if you can help out in any way with the Bag Pack, it would be hugely appreciated.
Once again our sincerest thanks to the management and staff of Costsutters, Friar Street for allowing us to engage in the bag pack. Your support is very much appreciated.
